Washing machines are a rare type of home appliance. They tend to last for years or decades if they are treated well, maintained regularly and repaired if needed. Since they are so expensive, they’re usually repaired if they break unlike blenders or coffee makers that frequently get thrown out and replaced. If you have a washing machine that has broken the decade-old barrier, you can often take a good look or take a strong sniff inside the tub and catch a nasty odor, unless it has been regularly cleaned and maintained.

You may even see mildew or detergent begin to build up around the door, seals and fabric softener dispensers. Since your clothes go inside this thing, it is very important to keep it clean and well maintained, so your clothes aren’t exposed to mildew and your washing machine can remain running for years to come.Cleaning the washing machine is very simple and inexpensive. All you need is white vinegar, a cloth and some elbow grease.

  1. First, make sure you dust off the exterior of the machine as it tends to get covered in lint if it is right next to the drier. Dowse your cloth with white vinegar and and wipe the exterior of the machine.
  2.  Pay attention to wiping the knobs, dispenser hatches and the inside of the washer door since there can be a lot of soap build up.
  3. Next, make sure your washing machine is empty and set it to run a full cycle on the highest temperature setting possible.
  4.  Measure out and add two cups of white vinegar to the basin and start the wash cycle. With the washing machine running an empty cycle at the highest temperature it should disinfect the inside and get rid of any odor and mildew build up.

Completing this task every six months or so should be sufficient to maintaining the inside of your washing machine.
