7 Tips For Cleaning Hardwood Floors

October 6, 2010 11:35 PM

When you have hardwood flooring in your home it can be a real pain, but here are some tips on how to keep your hardwood floor shine!

  • Use a dust mop to sweep up all the dust off your floors before mopping. the reason for this is to get all the dust and  grime off your floors.  A good dust mopping protects your finish on your floors.
  • Do not put furniture polish on your floors it can cloud your floors finish. If you find that your finish looks hazy then put 50/50 part ammonia and water in a spray bottle and mop your floor.
  • Use a no-wax floor cleaner to remove residue from your hardwood floor. A good product to use that will not harm your floor is plain distilled vinegar and water.  Making sure to dilute it 50/50. Vinegar does have a smell and you may not be able to withstand the smell so you can use a few drops of your favorite essential oil  and put in in the solution.
  • Consider using doormats and carpet runners  with non skid pads in high traffic areas to keep the dirt out.
  • Always remove spills promptly. While small drips of water may not harm the floor, be sure not to let excess amounts of water sit on the floor.
  • Wood floors are best cleaned on your hands and knees because you should only clean a small area at a time and then dry it and move on.
  • Remember, before you apply anything to your hardwood floor, you should test the product in an inconspicuous area to ensure that it will not damage your hardwood floor.
